He illustrated for the school's yearbook and worked as a commercial illustrator throughout college.§ In 1904, he moved to New York City and studied under Robert Henri at the New York School of Art. There, he became a member of the Ashcan School of Realist painters.§ In 1906, Bellow's painted his first masterpiece, "The Cross-Eyed Boy." During this time he painted many urban scenes for which he is known.§ In 1910, Bellow's married Emma Story. From this time on his subject matter shifted to portraits and landscapes. A year before his death in 1925, he painted his most famous portrait, "Lady Jean," showing his ten-year old daughter in Victorian clothing.NOTABLE WORKS:Lady Jean, Cliff Dwellers, Dempsey and Firpo, Riverfront No. 1, Blue Snow the Battery.
